About the Artist
Laura Schuler - I was born on an Air Force Base in Champaign, Illinois. Raised in New York, lived in Annapolis, Maryland and recently relocated to the low country in Beaufort, South Carolina where I have opened a studio workshop for artists.
My early influences in art came from my mother, an avid ceramicist, painter and prolific needle worker. Encouraged to experiment with all mediums, I found my formal drawing and painting education in professional artist, Margaret Gallagher and later, in the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore.
The love of glass began 1996, and as is the case with many glass artists - it began with stained glass. The freedom from line and form began after introduction to fused glass. I attribute my introduction and education in various glass techniques to these Artist Educators; Judith Conway and Kevin O'Toole of Vitrum Glass, Linda Ethier, Avery Anderson, Brock Craig, Bob Leatherbarrow, Roger Thomas and the Corning School of Glass, to name but a few.
It was Avery Anderson, who encouraged all her students to learn to draw for the betterment of their glasswork, which catapulted my next steps to a art education.
River Place Studio was born of a desire to offer these learning experiences in a well-equipped workshop where ideas and experiments can thrive. Where people can be cheered and their voices found in their own work that uses heart, mind and hands.
